NITROFENS-SR Tablets– The tablets contain the sole vital ingredient known as nitrofurantoin which is mixed in a unique formulation. This generally is a mix of two forms: nitrofurantoin monohydrate and nitrofurantoin macrocrystals. It is an antibiotic used to treat and prevent bacterial infections in the urinary tract. It gradually releases in the blood stream and maintains its healing effect. It contains 25 mg of nitrofurantoin macrocrystals which has slower dissolution and absorption and 75 mg of nitrofurantoin monohydrate which when exposed to fluids in the stomach makes a gel matrix and releases the drug gradually over time. This can be taken twice a day i.e. every 12 hours or as prescribed by the doctor. 

Mechanism of NITROFENS-SR Tablets

The molecule in these tablets works through a complex process in which several different actions work together to kill the bacteria. When these tablets go inside the body they rapidly secreted into urine and enter bacterial cells. After the absorption into the bacterial cell the enzymes in the bacteria reduces nitrofurantoin into highly reactive intermediates which further stops all the bacterial reproduction by disrupting the synthesis and repair of bacterial DNA ,RNA and cell wall.

Side Effects of Using NITROFENS-SR Tablets

Though the NITROFENS-SR Tablets has many benefits, it has some side effects also. A list of has them has been mentioned below:

• Nausea and vomiting (often observed by taking the tablets with food)
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Headaches and dizziness
• Gas
• Urine turns a dark yellow or brown color (this is harmless and temporary)

Precautions For NITROFENS-SR Tablets

Before consuming the NITROFENS-SR Tablets, be mindful of taking the following precautions:

• Always take the tablets with food or milk to increase its absorption, also to prevent an upset stomach.

• Swallow the whole medicine as it is SR formulation based, so crushing , breaking or chewing will disrupt its mechanism of gradual release.
• Completing the full course of this medication is very necessary. If we quit the intake in between the infection may return.
• Do not consume alcohol  as it reduces the medication’s effectiveness and also causes dizziness.
• As the medication may cause dizziness , avoid driving or operating heavy equipment until you know how it affects you.

How to Store NITROFENS-SR Tablets

Follow the instructions mentioned below:

• Keep the tablets at room temperature ideally between 15°C and 30°C.
• Keep the tablets away from excess heat and humidity.
• Keep them in a tightly closed container.
• Keep the medicine out of reach of children and pets.
• Discard the expired medicine properly and don’t flush down the toilet.
