After taking the syrup, the body converts disodium hydrogen citrate into bicarbonate ions, which are eventually excreted in the urine. The excretion of these bicarbonate ions raises the urinary pH. Increasing urinary pH, it enhances the solubility of cysteine and helps in the ionization of uric acid into more soluble urate ions. This process prevents stone formation and encourages the breakdown of existing uric acid stones. The alkaline environment reduces irritation of the urinary tract mucosa and blocks the growth of certain bacteria that thrive in acidic urine. This provides relief from UTI symptoms.
